June 17th1843:   In the first violent clash since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, 4 Maori and 22 Europeans are killed near Taumarina in Marlborough. The land dispute was between Nelson settlers wanting to settle in the Wairau Valley, and Ngati Toa chief Te Rauparaha.

1885:  The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York.  A gift from the people of France, The statue was shipped in 350 pieces and in 200 packing cases. The statue was designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, with the assistance of Gustave Eiffel.

1972:  5 men are arrested for breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington.

362:  Emperor Julian issues an edict

banning Christians from teaching in Syria.

1994:  O J Simpson, wanted by the police for murder, is watched by millions of people as he leads the police through Los Angles in a slow speed pursuit in his white Ford Bronco.
