June 18th,
1932, Aucklander, Esther James, reaches Bluff. She had left Spirits Bay in the far north to walk the length of New Zealand to promote New Zealand made goods during the depression. She had a break over Christmas/New Year, and had a week in hospital with an ankle injury after being blown into a gully on the Remutake Range.
1815, Napoleon Bonaparte is defeated at Waterloo in Belgium, by the Duke of Wellington, bringing to an end the Napoleonic era of European history.
1923, The first Checker Cab rolls off the production line at the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They had been made on a smaller scale since 1921, but the move to Kalamazoo saw production of the iconic car increase.
2017, French President Emmanuel Macron’s party La Republique en March and allies win a majority in 2nd round French legislative elections.
