1943: Ten US Navy personnel are drowned in a training exercise off the Kapiti Coast during poor weather. Because of wartime censorship, the event wasn’t reported and was surrounded in mystery for decades. A memorial was unveiled during a Memorial Day ceremony in 2012.
1979: President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn, climb to the roof of the White House to celebrate the installation of solar-energy panels there.
2002: 111 mine workers in a coal mine are China are killed in a gas explosion. In the first five years of the 21st Century, there were 5 disasters that killed more than 100 people. In 2004 approximately 6300 people lost their lives in Chinese mines.
1819: The paddle-wheel steamer “Savannah” arrives in Liverpool. After 27 days and 11 hours, it becomes the first steamship to successfully cross the Atlantic.
1837: 18-year-old Victoria is crowned Queen of England.
