Today in history is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.
The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.
From the life and death of Plato through to the latest most recent history as it happens, we intend on bringing you stimulating and educational historical knowledge.
June 23
1961: The Antarctic Treaty, becomes effective after being agreed in December 1959. It was signed by 12 countries and now has 54 signatories.
1934: Willam Bayly is convicted of murder. He was found to have killed Sam and Christobel Lakey after they disappeared from their farm near Ruawaro, near Huntly. The Lakeys were neighbours of Bayly and were known to argue frequently. He was convicted in large due to forensic evidence and was hanged in Mount Eden Jail in July.
1992: “Teflon Don” John Gotti, is sentenced to life in prison, after being found guilty on 14 accounts of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. He had been the head of the powerful Gambino family.
2013: Nic Wallenda walks on a high wire across the Little Colorado River near Grand Canyon National Park. He takes 23 minutes to make the walk along the 2″ thick cable, carrying a 43-pound balancing pole, 1500 feet above the river, without a harness. A distance of about 1/4 mile.
