Today in history is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.
The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.
From the life and death of Plato through to the latest most recent history as it happens, we intend on bringing you stimulating and educational historical knowledge.
June 30
1939: The first issue of the New Zealand Listener is published. It was
free to all radio licence holders, and it’s brief was to publicize
radio programs, although it soon expanded on this to become one of NZs
leading weekly magazines. Its paid subscription peaked in 1982 at
375,885, and it is now published by The Hamburg based Bauer Media Group.
1934: Adolf Hitler orders a bloody purge on his own political party,
assassinating hundreds of Nazis whom he believed had the potential to
become political enemies. The purge would become known as the “Night
of the Long Knives”
1908: A mysterious explosion, possibly the result of a meteorite,
levels 80 million trees in the remote Tunguska region of Siberia.
It is now believed to have had the force of about 20 Megatons.
1955: The Johnny Carson Show debuts on CBS. The show would flop,
doing only 39 episodes before being canned. Carson would later go on
to host The Tonight Show a position he would hold for 30 years.
