“This new information called into serious question Mr McSkimming’s fitness for office.”

Jevon McSkimming, appointed Deputy Police Commissioner under former Prime Minister Chris Hipkins in April 2023, has resigned following the discovery of alleged pornography containing “objectionable material” on his work computer, according to media reports.

Police Minister Mark Mitchell confirmed he had moved to dismiss McSkimming before the resignation, citing “very serious” new allegations separate from the earlier misconduct investigation that led to his suspension in December. “This new information called into serious question Mr McSkimming’s fitness for office,” Mitchell said.

McSkimming, 51, had a long policing career and was appointed to the statutory deputy role on Hipkins’ recommendation. Hipkins has since stated: “There were certainly no red flags raised during the appointment process.”

Former Police Minister Ginny Andersen also defended his record, calling him “hard working and a pleasure to work with.”

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers confirmed that the criminal investigation remains active.

McSkimming had already been under investigation for alleged inappropriate conduct toward a younger female staff member.

Authorities have not confirmed whether charges will be laid.
