Values morphed into the Greens

The New Zealand Green Party.

1970s–1980s beginnings: The roots go back to the Values Party (1972), one of the first green parties in the world. It promoted environmentalism, peace and social justice, including the belief that we must curtail commercial growth and population at a time when these ideas were outside the mainstream.

The Green Party of today and the tune hasn’t changed much. The same anti-enterprise streak runs through their policies: calls for wealth taxes, windfall profit taxes and constant suspicion of corporations. Once again, the detail is missing – there’s no recognition of reinvestment, risk or the way healthy businesses fund wages, innovation and public services through tax contributions.
