When Criminals Are Victims and Their Victims Are Criminals

We live in a time of truly upended values. Riots are “peaceful protests”. Men in dresses are “real women”. Criminals are victims and victims of crime are criminals.

When a gang of teenagers (allegedly) steal a car and wipe themselves out, it should be pretty plain to all who were at fault.

But, no.

In our topsy-turvy world, the (alleged) criminals are the victims.

Two brothers, 15 and 17, died in Abbotsbury about 4am on Sunday.

They were allegedly in a stolen car, with its owner accused of pursuing them at high speed when they crashed.

Their New Zealand-based father, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, says he is devastated.

Well, naturally. We wouldn’t wish such an awful fate on any parent. A father having to bury his sons is an unspeakable tragedy for him.

But let’s not lose sight of who is responsible.

They were two of three people in the allegedly stolen Holden Commodore[…]

Police allege the boys stole a car from a home in Edmondson Park from a 37-year-old man.

He woke up to the sound of his car engine revving and allegedly gave chase at what police say was excessive speed.

The alleged chase caused the boy driving the Commodore to crash into a light pole.

Silly us. Here we were, thinking it was the (alleged) car theft that caused the crash.

As a result, the 37-year-old man was charged with several driving offences, including negligent and dangerous driving occasioning death.

He was granted bail to face court later in the month.

A makeshift memorial has now been set up at the intersection where the boys died.

When an armed British career burglar is stabbed by the pensioner whose house he was robbing, it’s the 78-year-old homeowner and his disabled wife who have to live under police guard. The crim gets a flower-laden “makeshift memorial” (with the tacit collusion of the local constabulary) and any resident who dares object is branded a “vigilante”.

When another career criminal in the United States panics and swallows his drug stash and dies, cities across America burn and his name displaces that of one of the great philosophers of the Enlightenment at a (formerly) great British university.

And when a gang of teenagers (allegedly) steals the property of an innocent member of the public, woe betide the lawful owner should he try to stop them.
