It’s pretty galling that taxpayers fund a propaganda machine in the form of TVNZ that misleads them but, on the bright side, the state-funded broadcaster last week announced even more cutbacks are needed to balance their books.
Management at TVNZ had now said the company needed to increase their annual earnings by $30 million, by either increasing revenue or reducing costs, E tū union’s negotiation specialist Michael Wood said.
Wood deflected from the real issue at the heart of public distrust in MSM resulting from a growing awareness of media bias and spuriously claimed that technology is to blame due to “media less financially sustainable in the digital age”.
The truth is: more and more of the public actively avoids TVNZ.
A 2024 study released by AUT says “the proportion of those who actively avoid the news to some extent grew from 69% in 2023 to 75% (+6%) in 2024.
Publicly funded news is unsustainable when three quarters of your potential market actively avoid you because they don’t trust you.
If TVNZ keeps losing viewers at the current rate of six per cent per annum, they’ll have virtually no audience by 2028 but, until that happens (and it can’t come a moment too soon), we’re up against continuing media bias against anyone falling foul of them.
Expect a steady diet of orange man bad TVNZ coverage leading up to the US elections. Donald Trump ran foul of MSM when he first tweeted “fake news” in 2016. MSM never forgave him and the social media platform Twitter (now X) actively censored his tweets in 2020, labelling them “election misinformation”.
Never mind that TVNZ is more interested in producing derogatory, inaccurate information about Trump than in accurate and informative articles.
Harris appeared to use her Indian heritage to gain black votes in the run up to the US Senate.
Donald Trump spoke the truth about Kamala Harris when he used the traditionally accepted definition of “black American” as “the descendants of enslaved people who were brought from their African homelands by force to work in the New World”. Harris hopes to claim black votes in the run up to the US presidential election.
Another public figure blacklisted by TVNZ is Novak Djokovic, who refused the Covid vaccination in 2022, was deported from Australia and was banned from both the Australian and US Opens that year.
When asked why he was not vaccinated...
Djokovic replied: “Because the principles of decision making on my body are more important than any title or anything else. I’m trying to be in tune with my body as much as I possibly can.”
Djokovic’s personal decision runs completely counter to the Ardern Government’s successful propaganda machine that claimed Covid vaccination would only work if everyone gets it. Get vaccinated, save granny and stop the spread – and 90 per cent of us obliged.
TVNZ did not, and still does not, support individual choice in Covid vaccination and, so, Djokovic remains a target for bad publicity in 2024.
Since Djokovic turned pro in 2003 at the very young age of 15 years he has chased an Olympic gold medal and has been finally rewarded after 20 years of not giving up.
If NZ media had the same tenacity and commitment to providing accurate and unbiased news they might still be around in another 2o years. As it is, their future is doubtful and fully deserved.
