The Queenstown economy is struggling to rebound after Covid, and it is now struggling to find accommodation for workers. The Queenstown Lakes District Council would be expected to make rapid progress on consenting and allowing people to get on with building houses but they are not. There is already one case before the courts over the council’s consenting, and the word is that there are others thinking about bringing similar cases.
Queenstown’s lack of housing means that Ministers have been pushing for more housing and the whispers out of Wellington are that the Lakes District Council is seriously pissing them off by not delivering housing.
There are serious conversations being had about whether the council needs all its consenting functions replaced as happened to Christchurch City Council when they were too useless to provide consents in a timely manner.
The incoming mayor of Queenstown is going to have some tough conversations with people in Wellington about their council’s middle tier staff delaying and procrastinating and getting in the way. Minor process issues might matter to a minor bureaucrat, but these issues do not get more houses built.
