Words National Supporters Have Been Dying to Hear for Ages

Judith Collins is somewhat of an enigma for most voters. The media love to hate her, and a cursory look at their Twitter feeds tells you much.  It’s quite difficult for people to grasp what and who Collins represents when media coverage is limited, slanted or negative.

I have known Judith since she became an MP and she is no enigma to me. I am fortunate to have experienced her compassionate side, one the media would never let you see.

It was Judith Collins, together with John Banks, another much-maligned but caring politician who attended my mother in her last days on earth at the hospice to convey the message to her that her husband, my father, was finally going to be honoured in the New Year’s honours list.

She is a principled woman, one who is never afraid to state what she is thinking, and so when she gives an interview with Richard Harman from Politik and makes clear unequivocal statements like:

“There are certain things that we can be very concerned about, and those concerns will be issues around human rights, freedom of speech, issues around that,” she said.

“And we have since received letters from the Minister of Justice, Chris Faafoi and Andrew Little, the minister, put in charge of the response, on that and they’ve asked to meet with us and to discuss what they’re proposing.

“So I’ll be happy to listen to them.

“I’m not going to rule it out, but they will be obviously looking to see what we can agree on.

“But there are certain things that I don’t want to see happen, and that is things that are going to impinge further on people’s human rights in this country.

Is she talking about hate speech?

“Yes.”

And;

“Things are moving in society, but also the principles of the National Party are very, very solid,” she said.

“I’ve made it very clear, that if we stick to those principles and we put policies and actions up against those; we are generally going to be on the right track.

“We are not the Labour Party, and we should never try to be the Labour Party.

“And we’ve seen in the past what happens when we are seen as trying to be the Labor Party.

“But at the same time, we are a centrist centre-right party.

We have to represent the National Party, we are not a particular group party, and we need to be able to reach out across the whole country.”

These are words that are music to the ears of the long suffering membership who watched John Key turn the National party into a pro-Chinese, UN hugging bunch of wet Globalists.

She is telling the membership that the party’s values matter. That she believes in those values. That she is going to bring the party back to those values.

These are fighting words, they are words of principle, and it shows she has a spine.

It’s high time the party returned to its principles, and for those words I say Amen.
