Would You like a Swastika with That?

Anti-Semitism swamps the foodie scene.

What is it with Sydney foodies and anti-Semitism? The Good Oil. Photoshop by Lushington Brady.

What is it with the snob eatery trade and anti-Semitism? As I’ve been reporting for The Good Oil, high-end restaurateur Al Yazbek has been exposed as the ‘pro-Palestine’ activist arrested for displaying banned symbols of terrorism. Yazbek chose to celebrate the anniversary of the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust by brandishing both a Nazi swastika and a thinly disguised Hezbollah flag.

Since his arrest, he’s fled to India, while his fancy restaurants have been hit with mass cancellations, staff resignations and the withdrawal of major corporate partnerships.

Hopefully, another anti-Semitic Sydney glorified cook is about to get a good dose of FAFO.

The owner of upmarket Bistro St Jacques restaurant in Redfern in inner Sydney has horrified Jewish customers by posting on social media a picture of an Israel soldier in the form of a pig, alongside a comment describing Jews as a “death cult”.

Proprietor Nick Stone posted the images on October 7, on his Instagram page eatingstacksofsnacks, the anniversary of the Hamas slaughter in Israel.

Redfern, just a stone’s throw from Yazbek’s restaurant, abuts Sydney’s most heavily Jewish suburbs. So there’s a high likelihood of some of his regulars being Jewish. Or, more likely, ‘former regulars’.

No one ever accused anti-Semites of being the sharpest knives in the kitchen.

One picture posted by Mr Stone shows a pig, dripping with blood, dressed in the uniform of the Israeli Defence Forces next to a Star of David. The caption reads: “In memory of today October 7 the day we all re learned about Jews moving to Isreal (sic) and the absolute death cult they have shown us all they are.”

The message ends: “Glory to the resistance.”

So much for the Fucking Around: now comes the Finding Out.

Mr Stone hung up when The Australian called to inquire about the posts. In answer to a series of written questions, including whether he accepted the post was anti-Semitic and whether Jewish people were welcome at his restaurant, Mr Stone responded: “I have no comment to make on what was a personal Instagram post […]

Mr Stone removed the post, and the booking link to his restaurant, immediately after being contacted by The Australian.

Too late, pal.

Like the rest of the ‘pro-Palestine’ thugs, he’s pleading the transparent bullshit that it’s not about Jews. ‘My comment there was about the actions of the IDF… not about Jewish people.’

So, why did he specifically mention the Australian Jewish Association?

Australian Jewish Association chief Robert Gregory told The Australian that some of the imagery and words shared by Mr Stone were “straight Nazi-style hate”.

“There is nothing to be proud about October 7, the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust which involved rape of women and murder of children” […]

Dvir Abramovich, chair of the Anti-Defamation Commission, said:“This post is a vile, venomous act that seeks to strip an entire people of their humanity, reducing the Jewish community to stomach-churning caricatures that drag us back to the darkest nightmares of human history.

“We’ve seen this before – and we know the path it leads to. This revolting display is a chilling reminder that antisemitism is not just alive in Australia, but is brazen, emboldened, and out in the open. Let there be no mistake: to equate Jews with pigs, to brand them as a ‘death cult,’ is to launch a direct assault on the dignity and humanity of every Jewish person. This hatred is a cancer, and it must be cut out.”

Unfortunately, it only seems to be spreading. Even in the heart of Jewish Sydney.

A Jewish TV chef's bakery in inner Sydney has been targeted with antisemitic graffiti.

The graffiti in question is the infamous red triangle: the Hamas death mark. It is commonly used by the terror group to mark Jews or Jewish-owned properties targeted for imminent attack.

Ed Halmagyi, better known as “Fast Ed” to many, posted about the incident on social media, saying he also received a threatening note at the Surry Hills business.

“Be careful,” the note read.

Halmagyi, who sells bagels, matzo balls, babka and many other delicacies from Israel and eastern Europe, called it “Being Jewish in Sydney, 2024 edition.”

To his credit, Halmagyi is calling out cowardly anti-Semites who make anonymous threats for what they are.

“But the fact is, it's hard to be intimidated by inner-city middle-class Cosplay Radicals who graduated primary school without their pen licence.”

Nobody is buying the lie about ‘Israel, not Jews’, either. Or else, why was a Jewish-owned childcare centre in Sydney defaced with swastikas the week after the October 7 massacre?

The ‘pro-Palestinians’ are as unconvincing liars as they are cowards.
