National is looking increasingly desperate as it becomes apparent that their best-laid plans to govern with Act alone are turning to dust before their eyes.
But it doesn’t really matter because the voters are so over Labour that they are willing to hold their nose and vote to get rid of Labour.
National and Labour both served up major slams on each other on Wednesday.
Newshub understands Labour’s polling shows National’s numbers are coming down and that they’re now hanging around the mid-30s.
They’re consistently showing National will need to call on New Zealand First to form a Government. That clearly has National spooked.
The Council of Trade Unions – a Labour ally – also claimed on Wednesday that National’s maximum tax cut offering would only benefit about 3000 households.
Newshub sent the analysis to the National Party in good faith so they had adequate information to respond to our query, but instead of responding with any substance, National panicked and fired off a conspiratorial press release pinning it on Labour.
The people who prepared the numbers used to work for Labour but haven’t for years.
National is looking increasingly desperate, panicking and unable to answer very simple questions about their own policy.

National is spooked, and now true blue National sycophants are faced with the increasing reality that the man they’ve made a habit of hating since 1999 is likely the one they are going to have to deal with.
The cosy relationship that Christopher Luxon and David Seymour have built is in tatters, mainly because they both lost their minds.
Act started tanking when they attacked NZ First and Winston Peters. National stated many months ago that they were aiming for 40% plus, and that ship sailed about 30 seconds after they said it.
National’s campaign has been lacklustre, then Chris Bishop had a rush of shit to the brains and started trying to scare voters with the prospect of something that has never happened in New Zealand’s parliamentary democracy.
Labour, National and Act have all talked about Winston Peters and made him more relevant than ever before.
So, come Sunday night, I expect the biggest grin to be plastered all over Winston Peters’s face, and then I am going to enjoy listening to all of you who told me I was wrong now having to defend their new pal in coalition. It’s going to be delicious.
What staggers me though is the inability of National to get over 40% against the worst government in living memory. Perhaps I might remind you too what I said many long months ago.
