1. The Politics of NZ’s “postjournalism”
Bryce Edwards
- 📉 The number of journalists in New Zealand has drastically declined from 4,071 in 2006 to around 1,400 estimated in 2024, mostly employed by five major media companies.
- 📰 Recent closures and layoffs across the sector include Newshub, TVNZ's news shows, NZME's community newspapers, and suspensions like North and South magazine.
- 💻 The collapse is driven by loss of advertising revenue to tech giants like Facebook and Google, disrupting traditional media's funding model.
- 🤝 The Fair News Digital Bargaining Bill aimed to address this by forcing tech platforms to pay for linking to media content, but faced opposition and delays.
- 🌐 The shift to digital and social media has led to a decline in public trust in traditional media and challenges in regulatory oversight, exacerbating the industry crisis.
