Yet another attack on Winston Peters from the media luvvies, but this time it’s a non-story they are beating up
If it isn’t Guyon Espiner manufacturing bad-news stories about Winston Peters, then it is Tova O’Brien and her Stuff buddy, the whoopsy Glenn McConnell, doing the same. Even when the story is actually a good-news one.
In this case it is Tova O’Brien attacking Winston Peters for backing his staff and resisting funding cuts to his ministry and then Glenn McConnell following up.
Winston won’t be here forever. But while he is, he remains at this time the most formidable political figure in our country, bar none.

Peters’ decision to rule out Hipkins is a calculated move to rally his base and frame the 2026 election as a referendum on Labour’s integrity. Whether this gamble pays off depends on whether voters share his distrust of Labour’s old guard or see his stance as political posturing.
It was a great privilege for my generation to grow up admiring and being inspired by these remarkable people. It is clear that there are many role models for 10-year-old NZers today to be as inspired by as I was at Cooks Gardens in the 1970s.
The warnings were ignored. This was preventable. The question now is whether anyone will be held accountable, or whether we’ll simply wait for the next catastrophe.
