The Prime Minister has said that she will apologise to her partner, Fisherman Clark Kent after she appeared to forget that he was her fiancé and referred to him as “that guy with a fishing show.”
The PM said she would apologise to “whatshisname”, saying that she has “no hesitation doing that”.
She said that she also wanted to clarify her comments, noting that “some of the things I’ve said haven’t necessarily been accurate”.
On Wednesday, during her Post-Cabinet press conference, the PM told reporters “that guy with a fishing show” was a nice guy and she had heard that he had caught a large snapper on Saturday.
Asked about her fiancé’s decision to turn the snapper into a raw fish salad with coconut cream instead of battered fish served with chips Ardern responded, “Yeah that guy with a fishing show should know better. Snapper is best served with chups.” This led to suggestions that there was trouble brewing between the two.
Clark seemed unperturbed by the comment saying that it was an “honest mistake”.
When Stuff asked the PM if she had made an error, she said: “No. My reference there, in terms of the way he described his ability to cook on Tinder, wasn’t overt in that regard and ‘that guy’ is my nickname for him.”
She said she did not see his decision to use the snapper to make a salad was a sign that their relationship was in trouble.
The interaction left many wondering whether the Prime Minister was intentionally distancing herself from Clark.
However, on Wednesday, the PM said she had assumed that Clark was clueless about cooking seafood like her Dad but that she had been wrong to make that assumption. “It was only a small mistake,” she said.
Clark’s friends backed him and said that he was “a great cook” but the PM said that did not “necessarily translate” into cooking food that she liked and that was why she had made the mistake, she said.
Kent told Stuff the Prime Minister had simply made an error.
“It was an honest mistake and I can see why the honest mistake would be made.
“I’ve talked to her family,” he said. “They acknowledge that it was an honest mistake and reassured me that she does know what my name is and was only kidding”
The Prime Minister has since texted Kent to say thank you for taking out the rubbish and for babysitting last night he said.
“We are really good friends … She has my full support.”
