Oh the irony!  Imagine if the first person criminalised under the new act was a senior cop in possession of an illegal firearm.

I bet he won’t get 5 years imprisonment that the law abiding LFOs are threatened with, especially with an in-house investigation.

The officer allegedly assaulted his partner and had an unlicensed gun at his home.

Police are investigating a senior officer in Dunedin over allegations of domestic violence and a firearms violation, Stuff understands.

Officers were called to a property in the city following  allegations the man had assaulted his partner on Friday evening, after  which a gun was allegedly found at the home, sources said.

Police headquarters is staying tight-lipped over the allegations.

I bet they are!

Sources said the man had been drinking at an event before the Friday night callout.

Officers arrived to find his partner injured, sources told Stuff.

Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branch in Dunedin later searched the home, a source said.

It is understood a gun, for which the officer did not hold a proper licence, was found.

Police were presented with the version of events provided to Stuff and asked if the man had been stood down or charged.

A police media spokeswoman would only say an investigation was under way and would not comment on the allegations.

“Police are investigating following an incident involving a member of staff,” she said.

“At this time police are not in a position to comment further.”

For months we have been told that Police are experts with firearms, despite repeatedly shooting themselves or performing accidental discharges. They tell us that they are best suited to maintain a gun register despite losing firearms in their care, letting criminals walk into police stations and steal guns and breaching the privacy of thousands of gun owners by letting information go wild on the internet.

Now we have the possibility that, unlike Licenced Firearms Owners who have done nothing wrong it appears that a senior Police Officer has allegedly bashed his missus and worse, according to laws recently passed by fiat, has an illegal firearm.

If Police don’t throw the book at this cop then LFOs have a ready-made defence for having an illegal firearm.

Meanwhile, these clowns are running around in armoured vehicles, tooled up with the very “evil” guns they’ve dispossessed LFOs of. The very same guns that the Police Minister, Stuart Nash, says are “designed to kill people”. He clearly hasn’t thought that argument through as we can now quote Nash and ask why it is that the Police are armed with “evil” guns “designed to kill people”.

On top of that, we can safely assume that the gun buyback was an abject failure because despite all the legal threats issued by Police only a small fraction of banned weapons have been handed in. We know that it is a failure because there has been barely a whimper in media, six days after it closed, from Police about the “success” of the buyback. Silence, as they say, is golden, and tells us much about their buyback.

Now one of their own has been allegedly caught in possession of an illegal firearm.

This is yet another reason Police cannot be trusted to supervise the Arms Act.
