Christchurch’s beloved Arts Centre could close within 18 months if it fails to secure public funding.
Centre bosses are already beginning to wind down its operating organisation and have launched a major restructure in a bid to save money and stave off closure.
“This is now last chance saloon,” Arts Centre chief executive Philip Aldridge told Christchurch City Council on Friday.
“We are in a really difficult situation. What we need is an indication that you’re going to help us.”
The centre, which is the largest collection of heritage buildings in New Zealand, operates without any subsidy from the Government or the council, unlike the publicly-funded Canterbury Museum and Christchurch Art Gallery. It is run by a non-profit trust.
