No criticism allowed. The BFD. Photoshop by Lushington Brady.

The saying that “To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticise” might have a less-than-stellar pedigree, but that doesn’t make it untrue.

The phrase originated, not with Voltaire as popularly supposed, but with genuine white nationalist Kevin Strom. Still, even a broken clock is right twice a day. As the magnificent civil rights pioneer Bayard Rustin (the driving force between the March on Washington) once said, if a member of the Ku Klux Klan came up to him and said that it was a nice day, and it was a nice day, it didn’t stop being a nice day, just because a Klansman said it was.

As Paul Gibbard, a Voltaire scholar, has said, Voltaire mightn’t have said the quote, but “in terms of its spirit” it was “not un-Voltarian”.

To learn who rules over us today, one must consider just who the Establishment elite will not allow us to criticise.

Contrary to the target of Strom’s original quote, and the gibbering fantasies of anti-Semites, criticism of Jews is not just allowed, it’s practically encouraged. In fact, anti-Semitism is almost de rigeur for the media-political left.

The protected classes of today’s Establishment are the Democrats and their racist kampfbund. Big Tech has a stranglehold on the public sphere – and they’re not about to allow WrongThink.

Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz has poured over $5 million into a network of nonprofits run by Black Lives Matter leader Patrisse Cullors, according to financial disclosure records, raising questions about whether this relationship played a role in the company’s decision to censor unflattering news articles about the activist last week.

The social media giant blocked its users from posting links to a New York Post story that revealed Cullors, a self-described Marxist, spent $3.2 million on high-end real estate as her Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation raked in millions in donations.

This is no different to Twitter and Facebook blocking users from another New York Post story: Hunter Biden’s laptop.

But, as I discovered personally: no social media user is too insignificant to escape Facebook’s stifling censorship. My own account was summarily disabled after a post criticising BLM.

Silly me! BLM is not just a violent, racist Marxist movement, it has the ears of the most powerful and wealthy individuals on the face of the planet.

Several organizations founded by Cullors have been bankrolled by Moskovitz and his wife Cari Tuna, according to records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon. Although Moskovitz left Facebook as an employee in 2008, he is still reported to be one of the top stakeholders in the company, with most of his $20 billion net worth coming from his estimated 2 percent holdings.

The Open Philanthropy fund and Open Philanthropy Project, Moskovitz’s grant-making vehicles, contributed at least $5.6 million to groups founded by Cullors between 2017 and 2020[…]

The National Legal and Policy Center, a watchdog group that has been monitoring Facebook’s financial activities and Moskovitz’s charitable records, criticized the company’s decision to block reporting on Cullors.

“We think this, once again, proves freedom of speech is an option not a feature across the Facebook platform, where their corporate interests are placed above the interests of their users at every turn,” said Peter Flaherty, chairman of the NLPC.

My personal beef is that Facebook disabled my account before I had a chance to scrub my personal information and delete my account myself.

But the import of this goes far beyond my own disgruntlement. Facebook is one of the most powerful corporations in human history. It makes the Dutch East India Company look like a mom’n’pop operation. Along with Twitter, its stranglehold on the public sphere is almost total.

And, like an absolute monarch of old, or a Soviet commissar, it is making sure that the regime and its nomenklatura are absolutely above criticism from us proles.
