You know the multiculturalism jig is well and truly up when even the Canadians are sick of its shit. Canada has long prided itself as a model of multiculturalism, but recent events appear to be shifting opinions. Not least the gargantuan tide of mass immigration that’s swept Canada along with the rest of the West in recent years.
As two-thirds of Canadians have indicated that there are “too many” immigrants in the country, a new national survey highlights another aspect of the immigration issue: concerns about newcomers’ integration in Canada.
Conducted by Leger for the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS), the poll found that one-fourth of Canadians believe immigrants should give up their customs and traditions, a sentiment shared by one-third of Canadians over the age of 55. In Quebec, one-in-three respondents feel that immigrants should give up their cultural practices.
As I reported recently, Canada is being swept by a wave of violence between immigrant Sikhs and Hindus. At issue is an ethnoreligious dispute on the other side of the world. At the same time, violent and anti-Semitic protests have rocked Canada along with the rest of the West – again, over a dispute on the other side of the world.
Canadians are rapidly concluding that it’s high time immigrants left their old world hatreds behind them.
Jack Jedwab, the chief executive of ACS, was not surprised by what the survey found.
“Top of mind, Canadians will cite economic reasons when expressing concern about numbers of immigrants, but there is an underlying concern about newcomer integration and the exacerbation of inter-group tensions,” Jedwab told National Post in an email.
Strikingly, younger Canadians are more likely to be sick of multiculturalism importing foreign hatreds.
While 76 per cent of Canadians agree that it’s important to transmit customs and traditions to future generations, Canadians between the ages of 18 and 34 are – at 65 per cent – less likely to agree […]
Jedwab said it’s “ironic” that Canadians simultaneously support passing on culture and traditions while, in a country “where nearly half the population are immigrants and their children,” they believe newcomers should give up their culture and traditions.
“But it’s likely a function of some discomfort with certain manifestations of religious identities,” he said.
Being Canadian, he’s too polite to say it out loud, but, well, see above.
Canadians are also watching with dismay what the ‘pro-Palestinian’ thugs are getting up to in Europe. And no doubt worrying about when it will strike at home in Canada.
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs is deeply concerned about the attacks on Jews supporting the Israel soccer team in Amsterdam […]
In a post on X late Thursday, the CIJA said: “This the disturbing reality of Jewish life in 2024. And if nothing is done to address the scourge of antisemitism targeting our community, it won’t be long before Amsterdam becomes Montreal or Toronto following one of the usual weekly pro-terror demonstrations.”
Canadian politicians across the political spectrum condemned the anti-Semitic violence.
Melissa Lantsman, MP for Thornhill, Ont. and Conservative Party of Canada deputy leader expressed her dismay in a post on X: “The scenes from the streets of Amsterdam tonight are absolutely horrific. This is what ‘globalize the intifada’ looks like. Don’t look the other way. Watch the footage and stand up against this lawless mob there and everywhere.”
The prime minister has posted his reaction to events in Amsterdam. Justin Trudeau wrote on X today: “The news out of Amsterdam last night is horrifying. This is a dark moment for our world – and one we have seen before. My heart goes out to the victims, and the entire Jewish community today. Canada condemns this disgusting antisemitism.”
Also on X, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre reposted Melissa Lantsman’s tweet and called the attacks in Amsterdam “abhorrent.”
He went on to write: “Jews are being hunted in Europe days before the anniversary of Kristallnacht. Never again is now.”
Mostly, though, Canadians are as fed up as Brits, Americans and Australians, with being on the receiving end of the largest movement of people in history.
Recent surveys showed a steady rise in the proportion of Canadians who feel there are “too many” newcomers in the country, increasing from 49 per cent in September 2023 to 64 per cent in September 2024.
The survey also shows that the rapidly growing percentage of Canadians who feel there are too many immigrants are also “expressing more negative sentiment to newcomers,” indicating that their anxieties go beyond just economic issues, Jedwab said.
More specifically, a majority of Canadians oppose Muslim immigration.
“It suggests that there is a link being made by an increasing number of Canadians between the numbers that are being admitted to the country and the effectiveness of newcomer integration, a view held widely in the US and Europe and too often accompanied by toxic debates that stigmatize newcomers and that (we) want to avoid at all costs,” he said. “We’ll see if the federal government’s recent reduction in immigration levels modifies the perception. That said, the reduction in levels does have some ramifications for our future demographic well-being.”
On the contrary, not having the debate is what has made the issue fester. Shouting at people, who just want to keep their own country as they like, that they’re ‘racists’ has worn thin to the point of invisibility.
These people, like rioting Britons, are not ‘racists’ and they’re not ‘far right’. They’ve just had enough.
