Level 4

of New Zealand’s four-level COVID-19 alert system. It is likely Level 4 measures will stay in place for a number of weeks. More information on alert levels.

Government COVID-19 Response Briefing

There is no live media conference today (26 April 2020).

Today’s media update will be provided by a statement, to be sent this afternoon. COVID-19 case and testing data will be updated when it is available. See Current cases for more information.

The 1pm live media conferences will resume on Monday 27 April.


Today’s Details:

  • Nine new cases, four were linked to existing clusters, and five were linked to known confirmed cases
  • Total to 1470 cases.
  • There were 1,142 cases that had ben reported as recovered
  • Seven people were still hospital and that included one person in the ICU in Middlemore.

Yesterday’s details.

  • Five new cases
  • Four of the cases are linked to existing clusters, and one is still under investigation.
  • Another death. A woman in her 70s in Waitakere hospital died last night. She had been transferred from CHT St Margarets Hospital and Rest Home.
  • Seven people in hospital, one less than yesterday. This total includes one person in the ICU in Middlemore.
  • The combined total of tests undertaken to date are 115,015.

  • Confirmed cases are people that have had a positive laboratory test. For more details please refer to Case definition of COVID-19 infection.
  • A probable case is one without a positive laboratory result, but which is treated like a confirmed case based on its exposure history and clinical symptoms.
  • Recovered cases are people who had the virus, are at least 10 days since onset and have not exhibited symptoms for 48 hours, and have been cleared by the health professional responsible for their monitoring.

  • Locally acquired cases, epidemiologically linked: Cases that have a reported link (close contact or other epidemiological link) to a locally acquired case with unknown source.
  • Locally acquired cases, unknown source: Cases that have no reported history of international travel within 14 days of onset and no recorded epidemiological link to a source case.
  • Source of infection remains under investigation whereby source of infection could not be classified due to incomplete EpiSurv case report forms. These cases are removed from further analyses in the sections below.
