Thomas Matthew Crooks, who tried to assassinate former US President Donald Trump, was rejected by his high school rifle club for being a bad shooter.

Crooks opened fire at the former President at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Sunday (NZ time) killing one spectator and injuring two others. A bullet narrowly missed Trump, who was whisked off the stage.

Jameson Myers, a former classmate of Crooks told ABC News that the 22-year-old was rejected and asked not to return after a “pre-season” session with the rifle team at Bethel Park High School.

“He didn’t just not make the team, he was asked not to come back because how bad of a shot he was, it was considered like, dangerous,” said Myers.

Former classmate Jameson Murphy also told the New York Post that Crooks missed his target by close to 6-metres during the try-outs.

“He tried out…and was such a comically bad shot he was unable to make the team and left after the first day,” Murphy said.
