Face of the Day

“It’s barbaric, and this is meant to be for charity.”

Kain Parsons’ wife was sitting at a ringside table watching as he fought in a charity boxing match, and could tell it was not going well.

“All I remember is being focused on his face, with the look of shock. He never looked like he was in control with the fight. I just wanted it to stop,” Alana Parsons told an inquest into his death in Christchurch.

She recalled someone in the crowd yelling at Parsons’ opponent to “go at him”.

“It’s barbaric, and this is meant to be for charity.”

Kain Parsons, a builder turned project manager, died aged 37 in Christchurch Hospital three days after he was knocked unconscious at the Fight for Christchurch charity boxing match at Horncastle Arena in late 2018.

A coronial inquest into his death is under way.
