I’ve written this book called The House of Wolf and it’s about King Alfred. It’s a saga, because I’ve always loved sagas. I loved HBO and Netflix and Bridgerton and Game of Thrones, Succession, and so I’ve wanted to write a novel that is absolutely imbued with history, but is a page turner as well, where it’s full of people sleeping with inappropriate other people, all those things that we love watching on the telly.
In the same way that Charles Dickens was so influenced by the magazines that he read and which he wrote for, I feel the same way about Netflix, so I’m pleased to say that the history professors say, ‘Oh yeah, it’s a very interesting spin, yeah, I like that very much.’
I’ve had lovely, lovely reviews, but also it’s something that people who aren’t necessarily particularly interested in history like, because it’s fun.
I want to tell people about the book – it’s about how England was invented by King Alfred – but also the kind of things that we’ve been talking about, except possibly the toilet paper.
I like my show to be fun. I like it to be engaging. I like people to interact and engage with me, that’s what it’s about. There will be history, of course, because I’m that kind of bloke, but I just want it to be something that people will enjoy.
