The new Reserve Bank governor, Anna Breman, has apologised to Finance Minister Nicola Willis and Foreign Minister Winston Peters for signing an international letter without first seeking advice.

It comes after Breman, who has only been in the role since December, signed a letter of support for her US counterpart Jerome Powell, who was facing legal action from President Donald Trump.

Peters hit out at Breman on social media, telling her to “stay in her New Zealand lane”, adding: “the RBNZ has no role, nor should it involve itself, in US domestic politics.”

Willis added to the criticism earlier this week, telling reporters that Breman should have called her to seek advice, even if it was at 3am.

“She put to me that she had been reluctant to contact me at 3am in the morning. I said to her, ‘Look I’m available any time’, and that’s what New Zealanders expect of me.”
