“We’ve always said this from day one, it’s about entrenching Te Tiriti and making sure we never, ever lose... the Māori seats,” [said Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer].

In response, NZ First leader Winston Peters said, “I said from day one, we’re never going to work with a party based on race.”

Asked if he would work with Labour, Peters said, “We’re never going back there again.”

Labour leader Chris Hipkins said: “If that is Peters’ position, he’s sending a very clear message that a vote for NZ First is a vote for Christopher Luxon”.
