Yes, you read that correctly – a salmon.

Standing in the centre of Rakaia, 50 minutes south of Christchurch, the giant fibreglass salmon statue has long been a landmark denoting the fish’s importance in the braided river that borders the town.

Except there’s not many salmon left in the Rakaia River – leading to a popular annual fishing competition to announce it would no longer involve any fishing last week.
