Christopher Luxon has confirmed his party will not campaign on raising the retirement age this election.
“Instinctively we’re a party that believes that the age should lift ... but the reality is, we also being very pragmatic and acknowledge it requires a political consensus, and we don’t have that currently,” he said.
He said National will continue working towards a bipartisan solution, but they will not do so with a predetermined outcome.
Finance spokesperson Nicola Willis had previously expressed that she was very keen for a change, but acknowledged that she was not able to gather enough support.
“I’m going to be blunt with you, Chris Hipkins said no,” she said, adding she hoped to work together on a solution in the next term.
“This is bigger than one election campaign. This is about New Zealand’s New Zealanders’ [sic] future entitlement and their retirement, and I want them to have security about that. So let’s work together on it,” she said.
