A woman with kids has made herself homeless. She vacated a Healthy Homes-compliant home because she cannot be bothered airing the rooms.  She has previously complained about another property (upheld).  Would any landlord want her as a tenant?

A New Plymouth mother has decided she would rather face homelessness than stay in a mouldy rental, despite her landlord’s commitment to fix the problem.

Bronwyn Mccown, who rents a property on Lorna St, had handed in her 28-day notice to vacate the home which was so cold and damp in some of the bedrooms her children were becoming repeatedly sick, including her five-year-old who had asthma.

She had not yet found another property to rent.

The three-bedroom property was managed by Ray White New Plymouth on behalf of the owner who lived overseas.

Ray White New Plymouth owner Carey Simonson was aware of the concerns raised by Mccown and insisted the agency took its obligations to tenants seriously.

He said the property was fully compliant with current regulatory standards, including those set under the Healthy Homes initiative.

An independent report into the mould problem at the house found it to be a mild case, primarily caused by uninsulated outer walls, which resulted in cold and condensation.

Poor ventilation was also found to be a factor.
