NZTA have revealed the roads it wants to reduce speed limits on after deciding the current levels are unsafe. It’s most State Highways.
Potholes? Emissions? Making public transport look feasible? There are a lot of concerns: for example, the logistics and extra costs for transport companies that will negatively affect New Zealanders.
National’s transport spokesperson Simeon Brown says:
The government’s clearly got a plan. They want to slow down all State Highways to 80km/h and the government needs to be upfront and honest with New Zealanders about what their plan is.

On his official Facebook page, Brown says:
Blanket speed limits will simply just mean it will take longer to get around New Zealand, make our rural communities more isolated and will do nothing to address the poor state of our State Highways which have become peppered with potholes.
This is a short-sighted, quick-fix attempt address to the problem of road safety which is overly simplistic and doesn’t deal with the underlying issues.
There are a range of factors which can improve safety on our roads, but simply imposing blanket speed limit reductions across the entire network will not fix these problems.
National opposes blanket speed limit reductions.
