What Hate Speech Laws Will Mean for New Zealand

The proposed hate speech laws are a win for cancel culture and will create an even more divided country.

Tougher hate speech laws will take away a basic right, shut down debate, and make people afraid to express themselves. As I told media today, they will put cancel culture on steroids.

We’ll see petitions and lynch mobs demanding Police prosecute people with unpopular views. The only people who will win are the perpetually offended.

A conviction for hate speech will carry a maximum sentence of three years in prison. That’s longer than for common assault or assaulting a child.

Labour is cynically using March 15 to push the laws through. But it’s admitted they wouldn’t have prevented the attacks happening. It doesn’t know what problem it’s trying to solve.

What you can do

ACT is going to fight hard against these hate speech laws. Here’s how you can help:

1. Share our petition with your friends and family and ask them to sign it. We will keep you updated on new developments.

2. Tell the Government you oppose its hate speech laws at: humanrights@justice.govt.nz

3. Support our digital campaign. If you can help us run Facebook ads telling people about hate speech laws, please donate.

Please share so others can discover The BFD.
