When Francesca, phone in hand, told me Richard Prebble had been appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal, I laughed out loud. But, my wife wasn’t joking. Tama Potaka had, indeed, appointed Prebs, the arch Rogernome and former ACT leader, to the tribunal.

Francesca’s confirmation only redoubled my mirth. If nothing else, I responded, this coalition Government possesses a rare sense of humour. The mixture of disbelief, consternation and pure rage with which the news was bound to be received by the left beggars the imagination.
