Kainga Ora to Build 11.5 Tower Blocks at Ihumatao

Kainga Ora has announced that it is commissioning 11.5 tower blocks to be built on recently liberated land at Ihumatao.

The development will use modular homes, meaning each one-bedroom apartment will consist of a single factory-built module or ‘pod’ manufactured off-site.

Kainga Ora General Manager Construction and Innovation April Whakaheahea says the innovation will help fast track the delivery of public housing.

“Innovation is one of five key priority areas of Building Momentum – our construction plan for future homes. Off-site manufacturing will help to streamline the design and delivery of new builds”, she says.

“It’s yet another New Zealand build project that will make use of fully pre-fabricated, high quality modular homes for whanau. It will vastly reduce construction time and increase the delivery of housing so we can provide more new warm and dry homes for our public housing customers.”

All of the homes come complete with kitchen and bathroom components – they simply need to be connected and stacked into place within the building.

Kainga Ora has been working on the project with the liberators of the land and Rorirori Construction. The development has great amenities and is within walking distance of local shops and services and transport connections. There are plans to divert the light rail project to this housing development before terminating at the airport.

Following the issuing of building and resource consents, the project is expected to be completed within 10 months.

The only wrinkle in the plan is the reported existence of a small taniwha in a nearby stream. Assistance has been sought from Kingitanga and Government in order to trap and then slay the taniwha.

A recent sighting of the Taniwha in a nearby Ihumatao stream.
