Dear Editor

We were warned that the Resource Management Act gives councils the authority to effectively strip landowners of their private property rights by designating a property as a Significant Natural Area (SNA).

We were warned that the Wellington City Council’s Draft District Plan has proposals to put this power into action.

Now I see this proposal is starting to have an effect. I noticed this advertisement for a section for sale in Wellington, for less than its RV:

Preserve your own serene slice of paradise right here just minutes from the CBD. Nestled into the bush off Ngaio Gorge Road and with the sun filtering through the leaves you can feel the magic take over and the stresses of the world lift away as you enter your own special world.

Our owners originally bought the land over 30 years ago as a bird corridor and those principles are now supported by the SNA (Significant Natural Area) proposal in the WCC Draft District Plan.

While this may affect the options for use and development of the site, it is a unique opportunity for you to preserve an ecological haven and play a part in helping the planet. This escape to the peace of birdsong, flora and fauna just minutes from the city could be yours!
