On 25 November 2023 the police arrested Lucy Rogers for silently and motionlessly standing on Queen Street counterprotesting an anti-Israel protest with a sign saying SELECTIVE CONDEMNATION OF GENOCIDE IS EVIL. The Free Speech Union has funded a civil case in respect of her arrest.
However, there was a police investigation into her complaint about her arrest, which was severely botched. The police did not even tell Lucy the investigation was happening and they did not take a statement from her. They also did not interview a single one of the police officers who arrested Lucy. But when she laid a complaint about the botched investigation, the police refused to investigate it even though she had identified 28 errors with the investigation, most of which were major issues like a conflict of interest. The police want to sweep everything under the rug and not discipline the officers involved.
Therefore, Lucy has decided to take civil proceedings in defamation against the police for the press release that was put out about her on 18 February 2025 saying things about Lucy that are not true, as well as individually against the officers who told serious lies about her. However, she has very limited funds to do so and she is self-funded because the FSU are only funding her lawsuit in respect of wrongful arrest, not her defamation case. It is my hope is that if the defamatory press release put out about Lucy as a result of the botched police investigation results in findings against the police in court, then they will start caring about whether investigations are conducted competently.
