Media’s New Scapegoats for Rising House Prices

The march of the dullards through our society, most obviously reflected in the falling standards of our ‘news’ organisations, continues apace. They are guided not by the rational, but by the emotional, which is hugely subjective and responsive more to one’s own world view and political outlook than reality.

Thus we have media changing narrative from ‘government’ being responsible for ‘house prices’ when National held the House of Representatives, to the current socialist regime, beyond criticism in the media’s eyes, falling victim to any number of handy scapegoats responsible for ‘housing’ price inflation.

It’s so very predictable and suitably summed up by this super-lightweight effort from contributor Jenny Nicholls on Stuff: “Private developers will never build enough; it’s not in their interests to do so. Safe, comfortable and secure homes are like healthcare, schools and railways: it takes state action to ensure everyone can live in one” re-quoted from The Guardian but requiring the reader to ignore the reality exposed in the briefings to incoming ministers, published earlier this week, that just 4% of government housing stock meets their own “Safe, comfortable and secure” standards. That’s a huge ‘State’ fail, folks.

Mustering all the resources of her twit-o-sphere learning circle Nicholls also re-quotes this arrant nonsense: “If you want affordable housing, you need state housing, capital gains tax, rent control … supply is only a minor part of the affordability problem”, tweeted by someone going by the handle of Pua o te Reinga, to which she adds her highly original “I couldn’t agree more.” Really?  “Supply is only a minor part of the affordability problem” is a paradox so ridiculous even Tui would reject it.

I suppose you can’t blame the stupid entirely, especially when state agencies propagandise with complete lies encouraging such dunces in their dreams, like this, for example:

The above statement is completely, unequivocally, and utterly untrue. ‘State’ house-building only exceeded 2,000 units per-year twice in the period 1945-1960 and most years were well below that. The truth is that evil ‘private developers’ supplied 90% of the new builds over that period and still do.

But do you wanna know a secret? Those ‘private developers’ needed something to put foundations on: it’s called ‘land’ and that’s the very commodity being artificially restricted by our socialist-infested urban councils in pursuit of their diverse and densified antipodean New York dreams. It’s really hurting our aspiring homeowners, badly. That is the problem: it’s a very deliberate, very socialist, very unfair outlook, one where ideology trumps all, including reality and hardship.

Sayeth the pleb, “There is a shortage of bread, prices are rising along with the yeast, it is unaffordable, whatever shall we do?” Sayeth the socialist “Why do they need so much bread? And where should we put down new fields without destroying the existing landscape and increasing our emissions. No, comrades, we must pay more, and eat less.”

There is no ‘housing price’ inflation, there is only ‘land price’ inflation. It’s deceitful to say otherwise. It’s a policy debilitating, destructive, and fully intended. It stinks. It’s past time for our urban councils to own up to their misdeeds, and fer’chrissakes do something about it!
