Kaitaia Kourier, December 25th:
DOC rangers detain a suspicious person found camping on a Poor Knights island.
Ngātiwaiwai spokesperson Pe Kayhua asserted, “This is colonisation all over again!”

Politically, 2026 is, already, shaping up to be a very bumpy ride. The first verbal slaps are being delivered as the parties begin jockeying for positions, pushing and shoving as they endeavour to claim or retain the political high ground.
I look forward to updates from PDM regarding the formation of “The Juvenile Wāhine Party.” Is the Māori Sovereignty party self-immolating and has now locked itself into a death spiral? Will John Tamihere’s iron grip on the party and its finances be broken?
What will be the reaction of Luxon and Potaka to the UN Committee on Eliminating Racial Discrimination’s undeniably damning report on the complaint laid by Lady Moxon on the “significant and persistent pattern of political racial discrimination against Māori”?
More handouts?
Will tribal cash cows such as Māori Health Providers be investigated?
I for one will not be holding my breath!
David Seymour is promising ACT will not be silenced on the Treaty Principles Bill again. Pledging: “We will be campaigning [before the election] on the idea that New Zealanders, whatever wave of settlers you may be part of – the first being Māori, or any later ones – you nonetheless are human beings with hopes and dreams and equal rights in this country.”
Are you ready for another hīkoi or are you all hīkoied out?
Peeni Henare, during the Tāmaki Makaurau by-election, promised Labour would revive the Māori Health Authority as well as the compulsory “Aotearoa New Zealand Histories” programme in schools. What pressure will Jackson and the Māori Caucus bring to bear on Hipkins for greater promises of ‘lollies’ for Māori? Will Hipkins be coerced into bettering the $800 million designated funding for Māori Jackson secured in 2020?
I have lodged a further OIA request with DOC over the sanctioned landing on a Poor Knights island so I will keep you updated on that.
All the best for a very Merry Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year.
