Matua Kahurangi
Matua Kahurangi, unapologetically provocative, is infamous for his incendiary writings that challenge societal taboos and stir relentless debate.

It has been brought to my attention by X user Feng ‘Matua Steamed Kumara’ Moon that People Against Prisons Aotearoa (PAPA) are pushing some deeply concerning policies. In their publication “Abolitionist Demands: Toward the End of Prisons in Aotearoa”, they outline their short-term goals – and one of them is particularly alarming:

Prevent the implementation of any public sex offender register in New Zealand, and dissolve the soon-to-be-implemented government-restricted register.

Are you kidding me? This organization doesn’t just want to abolish prisons – setting violent offenders, rapists, and child abusers free – they also want to prevent any form of sex offender register in this country. No public list, no restricted government database. Nothing.

As a parent, this is terrifying. I’m not calling for vigilante justice – but I do believe I have the right to know if a convicted sex offender is living next door to my family. That’s not fearmongering: that’s basic safety and awareness.

The document goes on to describe the concept of a sex offender register, explaining:

A ‘sex offender register’ refers broadly to a state-managed database of all people convicted of one or more sexual offences. One of the most significant ways in which sex offender registers vary is in their availability to the public…

They point out that the United States is the only country where the national register is fully open to the public. Fair enough. But even registers restricted to government agencies – like the one New Zealand was preparing to roll out – are being targeted by PAPA for dissolution.

Let’s go back a few years: in August 2014 the New Zealand Cabinet approved a bill to introduce our first child sex offender register. As of August 2016, the Child Protection (Child Sex Offender Register) Bill was still making its way through Parliament with near-unanimous support. It’s not radical; it’s common sense.

Even more disturbing is that Green MP Tamatha Paul openly supports PAPA and is reportedly helping to fund their activities – something I’ve written about previously.

PAPA is not a moderate advocacy group. They are a radical, far-left extremist organisation pushing dangerous policies that would put communities at risk. They need to be called out and stopped – before their ideas make their way into our laws and our neighbourhoods.
