Ruled Out, Schools Out

Where are the heavyweight political leaders of yesteryear, or is this really what NZ politics has now become: infants squabbling in the playground while the school burns down around them?

In June, Labour ruled out working with ACT after the election. On July 20th, NZ First reiterated that they had ruled out working with Labour 12 months ago.

July 27th, National ruled out working with TOP.

August 4th, Labour ruled out working with NZ First.

This week, TOP ruled out working with Winston Peters as foreign minister, with Chris Hipkins doubling down on that.

If this trend continues I wouldn’t be surprised soon to hear National ruling out working with themselves, with Labour immediately announcing something similar.

Remember primary school? ‘I’m not playing with you because you play with them, and my mummy says they’re nasty.’

I despair. Where are the heavyweight political leaders of yesteryear, or is this really what NZ politics has now become: infants squabbling in the playground while the school burns down around them?
