Seymour’s response was a masterstroke, defending New Zealand’s right to govern itself without interference from UN bureaucrats who wouldn’t know a Treaty settlement from a parking ticket.
In spite of the massive impact that coming out has had on her life, she cannot and will not go back to life as a man. “Technically, it’s possible, because I haven’t had operations and so forth.”
If the critics had a shred of intellectual honesty, they’d engage with the actual substance of the bill instead of flinging mud at Seymour. But they won’t, because that would require effort and a functioning argument.
The eviction of Greenpark’s hut dwellers is not just a local dispute. It is a prophecy. A warning about what happens when the wheel turns, and the oppressed become the administrators, and power once again writes history with an iron pen.
Unproven hypotheses that are put forward as ‘truth’ or ‘scientific fact’, simply because powerful forces have decided to put them in that position, really have no more scientific validity than matauranga Māori.
A New Zealand version of Section 501 wouldn’t fix everything overnight. However, it would be a damn good start.
