Many countries have since condemned the war and a number have chosen to acknowledge Palestinian statehood.
New Zealand should withhold recognition until Palestinians themselves demonstrate readiness for peaceful statehood. Anything else would be a betrayal. The obstacle to peace has never been Israel’s refusal to allow a Palestinian state. It has been Palestinian leaders’ refusal to accept a Jewish one.
These types must not be allowed to succeed and Europe must ensure, along with America, that they don’t. A global conflict could well ensue, but, as in earlier wars, it is a price we pay to root out evil.
This is not collateral damage. It is the design. A fractured society is a pliable society. The more its members despise one another, the easier it is for elites to consolidate power under the guise of adjudicating conflicting rights-claims.
Let this tragedy not be in vain. Let it be the impetus for a better way forward.
If you are not willing to do what is necessary to destroy your enemies, then, for your own safety, you should step away from politics.
