Today, the streets of Dublin were filled with the voices of thousands of Irish citizens who gathered at the Garden of Remembrance for a major anti-establishment rally, starting at two pm. The event, described by organizers as a “historic national protest”, saw tens of thousands of participants march through the capital city.
Protesters expressed deep frustration with government policies, particularly around mass immigration, the housing crisis, and perceived ‘erosion of Irish sovereignty’.
The rally, promoted as a demonstration of Irish patriotism, drew a diverse crowd, including families, community groups, and self-described nationalists. Chants of “Ireland for the Irish” and calls for government accountability echoed through the city center as marchers moved toward O’Connell Street. Organizers emphasized unity, with one speaker declaring, “This is about protecting our homeland and demanding a government that listens to its people.”
The rally comes amid growing public discontent in Ireland. The housing crisis, with skyrocketing rents and limited affordable homes, has fueled anger, as has the government’s handling of immigration. Recent months have seen similar protests in Dublin and other cities, with some focusing on specific issues like neutrality or government transparency. A small number of counter protesters gathered to voice their discontent to the rally, however, supporters of the rally insist it reflects “legitimate grievances ignored by the political establishment”.
The National Party has emerged as a leading force within Ireland’s nationalist movement, gaining traction amid growing public discontent. Founded in 2016, the party, which advocates for a “32-county Gaelic Ireland” and stringent immigration controls, has seen increased support, particularly among younger voters and rural communities. Strong chants of “Execute the order, back to the border” echoed through the ranks of the party and people today along with “Get them out” in reference to the perceived failed government.
With an elected councillor, Patrick Quinlan, and a visible youth wing, the National Party’s unified messaging and active presence at events like today’s rally have positioned it as the ‘dominant nationalist voice’, overshadowing smaller, less organized groups.
Also present, http://ourpetitions.ie was actively engaging with the crowd, distributing flyers advocating for a referendum on immigration policy. Volunteers emphasized the need for a public vote to address what they described as “uncontrolled immigration” and its impact on housing and public services. Their materials urged attendees to sign an online petition to push for a national referendum, framing it as a “democratic tool to restore Irish sovereignty”.
The events scale was striking, with dense crowds waving Irish flags and singing traditional songs. One user described it as “a turning point for Ireland,” while another called it “a powerful stand against globalist policies”.
Only time will tell if the powers will now ‘pivot to the will of the people’ or if tensions will escalate further.
