As part of our drive to keep our comment section the best in New Zealand we showcase each week an example of a top-notch comment that adds value to The BFD.

Today’s comment was written by David Theobald  Thank you David Theobald for taking the time to craft such an interesting comment.

Interesting, worrying, dystopian, scarcely believable – we’ll settle for interesting for the time being. We are living in interesting times and next week is stacking up to be jolly interesting.

On a purely domestic front, our immediate family should increase in size and I might get to drive a 1963 British sports car.

On a national front we will be treated to our latest edition of a ‘day late and a dollar short’ from our reactive administration. Earlier this week we had the 25c temporary tax cut on fuel that was so poorly thought through (RUCs and farmers) and timed (the price of the raw commodity already falling as the gum and arm flapping was in progress) that we could be reassured that the inability to organise a nun shoot in a convent had not been lost.

Since then we have been treated to their usual MO for upcoming ‘big things’ being rolled out. The paid-for MSM saying that mandates should be relaxed, the opposition (sic) saying the same in a totally lily-livered and inadequate way and even the Head Girl saying that mandates need to be ‘reviewed as to their current form and means of enforcement as they may not be filling the function they were designed for’. I made that up as I can’t bear listening to her, but I bet it is not far off the mark. And of course, we have had the usual announcement of an announcement.

So, sometime next week, we will get the dropping of vaccine mandates and passes (but expect health workers to be further tortured), we will be allowed more people in bars and – probably not much else. Damned masks will stay – because ‘the science’ supporting their use is so robust and stood the scrutiny of several randomised prospective trials. Well, there aren’t any of those, of course, but why let the facts get in the way?

It will be lauded in the MSM as freedom, Dallow will be beside himself in excitement and make English an even more threatened language in his nightly hour in our living rooms. We, the great unwashed will be expected to be grateful and give praise to our super clever strategic masters of the universe and be oh so thankful we have returned to normal.

Except what we are going to get will in no way resemble normal. Everything has to go (yesterday would be good) and, more importantly, the statutes that allow it to be all reinstated at the flourish of a pen have to be consigned to history as well. Never again.

And outside the soon not be quite such a Hermit Kingdom, I have no idea what is going to happen next. Things in the Ukraine are going far from swimmingly for anybody. One lot of bad people up against some worse people with some also bad people looking on and trying not to be sprung helping one of the bands of bad people. And did China really have to sail an aircraft carrier through the Straits of Taiwan last night?

I think I might upgrade interesting to worrying.
