What AI cannot do is create something original. It can only copy and concatenate other’s works. The biggest danger, then, is not that AI will replace humans but that it will cause stagnation. Take the current controversy over using AI-generated Actors. You can do this quite successfully for Marvel movie pulp and Disney dross. What you cannot get from AI is a ground-breaking, stunning performance like Heath Ledger’s depiction of the Joker. Why? Because the creation of the Joker was a wholly original take from Ledger himself. AI is solely derivative.
We should stand firm with the actors who are striking against the indiscriminate use of AI to save money – unless we want to watch nothing but blockbuster explosions and cloned robots for the rest of our lives.
Stagnation is the legacy of AI. No new inventions, just incremental improvements. No risky exploration, just data accumulation. No writing, music, or a painting that stirs your soul, just pulp fiction, pop music and book cover art. All the spice taken out of your world and only machine code left.
I would say that death would be preferable, but watching people wander around with their faces glued to their cell phones, I think they are probably dead already and zombies have already taken the planet.
