There have been many articles on YouTube lately concerning apparent differences emerging between some member countries of the European Union. Before embarking further on the topic, it is worth noting one should not believe everything that appears on YouTube, as anyone familiar with the channel’s content would be well aware. However, there are sufficient articles to justify a look at just what is going on.
AI will inform you that the EU is experiencing internal divisions, fuelled by the rise of ‘far right’ (even AI programming has bought into the nonsense of far right) and populist parties, disagreements on critical policy issues and a persistent East-West divide. While the EU has maintained unity on major issues like the war in Ukraine (Hungary and Italy haven’t), deep and growing fissures threaten its long term stability and effectiveness.
It was the traitorous Edward Heath who first took Britain into the bloc. He spun the idea (which is a classic example of why one should never believe what comes out of a politician’s mouth) that Britain was simply joining a common market for trade purposes. That was never the intention and, while not admitting it, he knew exactly what the end game was.
Right from the outset there have been two main players in the EU: France and Germany. These two still want to be seen as such. The leaders of both countries show dictatorial tendencies and both have tried to outlaw parties of the right. The problem they have is, as AI points out, that parties of the right and more populist parties are gaining traction around the world.
This is simply human nature at play. People who are independently minded don’t take kindly to being told what to do: we don’t like being dictated to; we want government, as much as possible, out of our lives. The left, of course, have a completely different ideology. The government must drown you in stupid dictates, tax the living daylights out of the wealthy and tell you what you should eat at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It is the politics of complete control.
This is the exact path the EU takes and will probably prove to be their ultimate downfall. This is where the cracks in unity are, unsurprisingly, starting to emerge. This is also where the East-West divide comes into focus. On one side you have the Western European member states and on the other are the newer Central and Eastern members. This divide highlights long-standing political, economic and cultural differences. The long-term outlook is that never the twain shall meet.
Then there is the European Commission, a group of highly paid unelected civil servants appointed by the European Parliament. The president of this bunch of nefarious individuals is Ursula von der Leyen. There are times when this lady comes close to giving the impression she is the female incarnation of Hitler. She rules with an iron fist. She wants, demands even, total control. Her raison d’être is to have all power vested in Brussels. A European super state ruled by her.
Now we’ve met Iron Ladies before, Margaret Thatcher was even called that, but any attempt at comparison of likeness between the two is an exercise in futility. They are at opposite ends of the spectrum. My prediction is that von der Leyen might be getting her comeuppance sooner than she expected. There are now real stirrings among some members, certainly among those on the right.
The last thing they are going to agree to is handing their country’s sovereignty to Brussels and nor should they. The very thing Heath successfully hid from the British people is now being exposed. Von der Leyen is now risking not only her own position but also the future of the EU itself. Some member countries are already defying Brussels and doing their own thing on matters like the economy and migration
This is where von der Leyen gets into trouble because neither she, nor the European Parliament, have the power to stop them. This is the fragility of the EU at its core. Von der Leyen has threatened to withhold monies due to certain countries if they step out of line, and has already done so, but that is not a recipe for unity. Italian PM Meloni has defied Brussels on immigration and is having Italian ships intercept boats before they arrive in Italy. Those on board are taken to, processed and housed in Albania – paid for by the Italian government. Immigration numbers have been significantly reduced; a policy not liked by von der Leyen.
Hungary had a referendum where the results showed the majority of the people don’t want the country to be involved in supporting the EU stance on the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Victor Orban intends to honour the referendum result. The EU issued a diktat, in relation to the war, that all member countries stop buying Russian oil and gas and buy American instead. America has ramped up production as a result but many countries are continuing to buy from Russia simply because it is cheaper, something von der Leyen also can’t control. Trump is not a happy chappie!
As a trading bloc, Europe had a possibly bright future. What it is now trying to be coerced into is something entirely different. Von der Leyen is illustrating that the German psyche has not changed. The country threatened world peace twice in the last century and their ulterior motives should always be regarded with suspicion. This time it is no different. Member countries need to stand up for their own interests, sovereignty and independence. They should not consent to be ruled from elsewhere.
What von der Leyen is proposing is not democracy: rather it is a form of unilateralism that should be abhorrent to any free, peaceful and democratic nation. It would seem she is trying to achieve, by peaceful means, what Germany has failed to achieve, historically, by military means. It is the German DNA at work. Message for Ursula – IT WILL NOT WORK!
Britain is well out of the EU and should keep out. Prime Minister Starmer, who struggles to shed daylight on practically anything, is blinded by nonsensical ideology and wants to get back in via the back door. If he thinks he won’t be bullied like everyone else is, he’s dreaming. Rejoining will see his dream turn into a nightmare.
