George

A disturbing repercussion of this virus has been the dismantling of democracy. The current Government’s historical performance has been wiped clean. Its previous two and a half years of mismanagement have vanished without trace. All the relevant indicators that measure the Government’s performance through its term of administration have become irrelevant. So how do the opposition parties compete?

They can’t. Not while the Government has at least two months of daily political broadcasts at its disposal to promote its leader and their ideological virtues. Not while fifty million dollars has been allocated to a compliant MSM. And definitely not while parliament is in lockdown.

However, there is a glimmer of hope. Just because the political landscape has changed dramatically, those who are charged with the management of this change, haven’t. The same mob that so underperformed in calmer times are replicating the same dysfunction during this time of crisis. And this is the evidence.

Out of 210 countries, New Zealand is 124th= when measuring deaths per million of population, well in the top half. An even worst indictment is that amongst our fifteen Pacific nations, and with the inclusion of Australia, New Zealand has the ignominy of being the worst-performing nation when measuring deaths per million population.

All these nations, including New Zealand, have one thing in common. All our boundaries are surrounded by sea. The many shortcomings of this Government’s handling of this crisis are slowly being exposed. It’s starting to unravel and soon there will be nowhere to hide. This damming exposure needs to be questioned and answered. Democracy must be restored.
