Some people found New Zealand teacher Ethan Aloiai’s course on “Western Civilization” entitled “The West is the Best”. They said that it is proof that Ethan is a racist. Did they read it properly, though, I wonder, or did they stop reading after the title?
In the course Ethan is saying that the only reason the West flourished is because of Christianity. When it leaves Christianity behind, he is saying it will likely decline. It is not a promotion of the West by itself. It is a promotion of Christianity. The course (not unreasonably) was being taught at a multicultural Christian School.
Did you know that Christianity is the most cross cultural, diverse movement throughout history?
I’m a Christian. I believe all people are made in God’s image and are equal in value and dignity regardless of whether they are male or female, their ethnicity, upbringing or political views.
Christianity says that the main problem is that we’ve failed to love God, and the pain caused by racism is a symptom of that. People of all races have sinned and need Jesus. There is no perfect ethnic group.
Jesus died to bring reconciliation between God and people from all ethnic groups. Finally Jesus brings peace between ethnic groups too. In the book of Revelation you find people of all nations, tribes, tongues worshiping God side by side in love. I go to a multicultural church where I get a little taste of this reconciliation every Sunday.
That’s why I don’t think Ethan is a racist because I know he holds to the equal value and dignity of all people as well. He has said several times that he is not racist and hates ethnic superiority.
Very few people in New Zealand are Christian nowadays, so it’s understandable that people didn’t get it.
