I don’t usually watch Gutfeld! For a start, it’s on the Fox News channel and I don’t usually watch Fox News. But, in the spirit of giving the winners their due, I resolved to spend at least five minutes taking in the show. Half an hour later I was still watching.
There was – dare I say it – joy on the faces of the participants. OK, OK, if my team had just won the presidency, the Senate, probably the House and the popular vote, I would be feeling pretty damn joyful myself. In the past, on the few occasions I paused my news network channel-surfing long enough to absorb the Gutfeld! ‘vibe’, what has struck me was the show’s sneering tone and the sheer nastiness of the panel’s ‘light-hearted’ commentary. I’m not surprised: Fox specialises in mean Republicans, and Gutfeld!’s Republicans are meaner than most.
