1936: Maori and Pakeha from around New Zealand converge on Manukoihi
Pa in Waitara, Taranaki, to attend the unveiling of a memorial to Sir
Maui Pomare. Pomare was the first Maori medical graduate and had been
a health reformer and Cabinet Minister. He had died in 1930.
1976: The first recorded outbreak of the Ebola virus occurs in the
Sudanese township of Nzara. By the time the epidemic is over 284
people are reported as having the disease and about half die.
1985: After 59 years Route 66 is decertified. Decertification will
see all the highways iconic signs removed. Route 66 stretched from
Chicago to Santa Monica, some 2200 miles, passing through 8 states.
1871: The Yen becomes the new form of currency in Japan.
2008: Bill Gates steps down as Chairman of Microsoft Corporation to
work full time for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
