Today in history is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.
The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.

1963: A NAC, DC3 crashes in the Kaimai Ranges, killing all 23 people on board. The flight was from Auckland to Wellington, via Tauranga, Gisborne, and Napier. During it’s descent into Tauranga the plane was caught in a turbulent downdraft and slammed into a ridge. It took 2 days for rescuers to reach the site.
1988: The US warship ‘Vincennes” shoots down an Iranian passenger jet killing all 290 people on board. They mistook it for an Iranian fighter and fired 2 missiles. The US tried to defend the shooting down of the airliner but later accepted that they were at fault, and paid $62 million to the families of the Iranians on board
1790: In Paris, the Marquis of Condorcet proposes granting civil rights to women. He was a French philosopher and mathematician, whose ideas included a liberal economy, free and equal public instruction, and equal rights for women and all races. He died in prison after a period of flight from French Revolutionary authorities.
1903: The first cable across the Pacific Ocean is spliced between Honolulu, Midway, Guam, and Manila.
